Orlando With Teenagers
Orlando with teenagers: VelociCoaster, Epic Universe, SeaWorld's 54-inch coasters, Gatorland's zip line, airboats, Kennedy, helicopters and glowing kayaks.

Teenagers judge Orlando by two things: how fast the rides are and whether anything feels real. Build the trip around Universal and Epic Universe for the coasters, add SeaWorld for its 54-inch rides, then mix in the adventures teens remember: the zip line at Gatorland, an airboat through the marshes, a day at Kennedy Space Center and a night kayak on glowing water.
Two practical points shape the plan. Universal and Disney park tickets are bought direct from each resort; see our Disney World tickets guide. And ICON Park on International Drive can now require anyone 17 or under to be with an adult aged 21 or over, so a group of teens can’t be dropped there alone.

Universal and Epic Universe: the coaster days
Universal Orlando is the teen headline. It has four parks, and the newest, Epic Universe, opened on May 22, 2025, with five themed worlds including SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, the Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe. Our ranking of the best rides at Universal Orlando covers them in depth. The rides teens ask about, with their official minimum heights:
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster (Islands of Adventure): 51 in
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (Islands of Adventure): 48 in
- Stardust Racers (Epic Universe): 48 in
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (Epic Universe): 48 in
- Dragon Racer’s Rally (Epic Universe): 48 in
Admission comes from Universal or its authorized sellers. On 1- and 2-day tickets Epic Universe is its own separate day, while 3-, 4- and 5-day Park-to-Park tickets let you hop into Epic. Our Universal ticket options guide and Epic Universe tickets page explain which to buy. What GetYourGuide does sell are add-ons: the Universal 2-Park Express Passes cut standby queues at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure but exclude park admission, so you still need a ticket. Standard Express is sold for Epic Universe; Express Unlimited is not.
In the fall, Halloween Horror Nights runs on 49 select nights from August 28 to November 1, 2026, with 10 haunted houses. It is a separate evening ticket, and Universal does not recommend it for children under 13. For a 15-year-old horror fan, it is often the night of the trip.
Disney has fewer big thrills, but TRON Lightcycle / Run and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets (both 48 in) and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (42 in) still land with teens.
SeaWorld’s big coasters
SeaWorld Orlando is the park teens underrate until they ride Mako. SeaWorld calls it Orlando’s tallest and fastest coaster: 200 feet tall and up to 73 mph, with a 54-inch minimum. Pipeline, the stand-up surf coaster, Kraken, the floorless coaster, and Manta, the flying coaster, also need 54 inches. Ice Breaker, with its beyond-vertical drop, needs 48. Our SeaWorld rides and shows guide gives the order to ride them in.
The SeaWorld Orlando park admission ticket books through GetYourGuide, unlike Universal and Disney admission, which you buy direct. SeaWorld also runs a weather make-good: if rides close for more than 60 minutes for lightning, wind, heat or rain, you can claim a return ticket within a week.
Gatorland’s zip line and the airboats
The Screamin’ Gator Zip Line is the best-value thrill outside the parks. It has five zip lines covering 1,200 feet and a 150-foot chain bridge, with towers up to 65 feet and speeds of nearly 30 mph, running over the park’s walkways and animal exhibits. Plan about 90 minutes for the course. The Gatorland zipline adventure includes all-day park admission, so you can stay for the Gator Jumparoo show afterward. Riders must be about 3 feet tall and no more than 275 lb, children 8 and under need a participating adult, and closed-toe shoes are required. Teens 12 and over can also book Gatorland’s two-hour Trainer-for-a-Day. See our Gatorland tickets guide for the other options.
An airboat is the other easy win. Teens usually prefer a longer ride on a smaller boat: Marsh Landing on Lake Toho uses smaller boats that reach marsh areas the big boats can’t, and its 90-minute ride is the operator’s most popular. Book it as the Kissimmee Everglades airboat adventure. For better light and cooler air, the sunset airboat tour goes out in the evening. No operator guarantees alligator sightings on day rides. Compare them all on our airboat tours page, or see the airboat tours with transport if you don’t have a car.
Kennedy Space Center
A teen who likes space will call this the best day of the trip. Admission covers Space Shuttle Atlantis with the Shuttle Launch Experience, the bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center and The Gantry at LC-39, where a full-scale rocket engine runs a simulated test fire. It is about 50 miles east of Orlando, so plan a full day. The Kennedy Space Center trip with transport handles the drive, and our Kennedy from Orlando guide compares it with driving yourself.
For a bigger thrill, the Astronaut Training Experience is a paid add-on with simulators. The listing says it is not suitable for children under 10, and trainees aged 10 to 17 need a paying, participating adult, so a parent signs up too. If a launch is scheduled during your trip, the viewing areas at the Visitor Complex are included with admission.
Discovery Cove for older kids
Discovery Cove suits teens who would rather snorkel than queue. The Grand Reef has thousands of tropical fish and rays, and the Signature Dolphin Swim puts groups of up to nine in the water with a trainer. The age rules open up for teens: SeaVenture, an underwater helmet walk, starts at age 10 (10 to 13 with an adult 18+), and so does the Shark Interaction add-on. Book the Discovery Cove admission ticket, and check that your package names the dolphin swim if you want it. Our dolphin swim guide and is Discovery Cove worth it? cover the cost question.
Evenings: helicopters, glowing water and I-Drive
A helicopter flight is short but memorable. The narrated day helicopter flight over the theme parks and the after-hours flight both seat three passengers per ride with window seats, and everyone is weighed for safety, so larger groups fly in turns.
Bioluminescence kayaking is the standout night out from late spring to fall. On the Space Coast lagoons, tiny dinoflagellates light up every paddle stroke, peaking from June to October with July and August best, and comb jellies glow in the cooler months. A new moon gives the darkest water. The Magic After Dark bioluminescence kayak tour includes a glow guarantee or a return voucher.
Closer to the hotels, ICON Park has the Orlando SlingShot (54 in minimum), SEA LIFE and Madame Tussauds. After a teen takeover in April 2026, ICON Park added a chaperone policy it can switch on without notice: guests 17 and under must be with an adult aged 21+, and each adult can supervise up to six minors. WonderWorks, open until midnight, has laser tag and a glow-in-the-dark ropes course, but under-18s on the ropes course need someone 21 or over with them. More ideas are in our Orlando at night guide.
Which ones fit your teen?
- Coaster fans: Universal and Epic Universe (bought direct), then Mako at SeaWorld.
- Animal and outdoor kids: the Gatorland zip line, a 90-minute airboat, Discovery Cove with SeaVenture.
- Space fans and future engineers: Kennedy Space Center, with the Astronaut Training Experience if you’ll join them.
- Night owls: Halloween Horror Nights in the fall, a bioluminescence kayak in summer, a helicopter flight any time.

Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Orlando with teenagers besides theme parks?
Plenty with a real thrill. Gatorland’s zip line has five lines over the park’s animal exhibits, airboats run across the marshes south of the city, and Kennedy Space Center fills a full day with rockets. In summer, a bioluminescence kayak tour on the Space Coast lagoons is the most memorable night out. Helicopter flights over the parks and Discovery Cove’s snorkel reef round out the list.
Can teenagers go to ICON Park without an adult?
Not always. Since April 2026, ICON Park has had a chaperone policy it can switch on without notice: guests 17 and under must be with an adult aged 21 or older, and each adult can supervise up to six minors. WonderWorks has a similar rule for its ropes course, where guests under 18 need someone 21 or over. Plan to go with them.
Is Halloween Horror Nights OK for teenagers?
For older teens who enjoy horror, it is often the highlight. Universal does not recommend the event for children under 13, since the haunted houses and scare zones are graphic and intense. In 2026 it runs on 49 select nights from August 28 to November 1 at Universal Studios Florida, and it needs its own event ticket on top of any daytime park ticket.
How tall do teens need to be for Orlando’s biggest coasters?
Most headline coasters need 48 inches, including Hagrid’s, Stardust Racers, TRON and Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets. VelociCoaster needs 51 inches. SeaWorld’s Mako, Kraken, Manta and Pipeline need 54 inches, as does the Orlando SlingShot at ICON Park. Most teens clear all of them, but a young or small 12-year-old may not.
Can teenagers do the Astronaut Training Experience at Kennedy?
Yes, from age 10. The listing says it is not suitable for children under 10, and trainees aged 10 to 17 need a paying adult who takes part too. It uses simulators, so the listing also rules it out for people with motion sickness, back problems or heart conditions. It is an add-on to a Kennedy visit, so plan it into a full day there.
