Universal Orlando Parks Explained: Which Park Should You Visit?

Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe compared: what each park does best, who it suits, how many days to plan and where Volcano Bay fits in 2026.

Updated October 2026

Universal Orlando parks explained: Universal Studios Florida for Diagon Alley, Islands of Adventure for coasters, Epic Universe for Nintendo and the Ministry of Magic

Universal Orlando has three theme parks plus the Volcano Bay water park, and the three are much less interchangeable than their names suggest. Choose Universal Studios Florida for Diagon Alley, movie-based rides and an easier-going day. Choose Islands of Adventure for Universal’s strongest run of big thrill rides, including Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster. Choose Epic Universe for Nintendo, Dark Universe, the Ministry of Magic and Universal’s newest generation of rides.

If you have the time, don’t choose at all. Three days is the right length for a first Universal Orlando trip, with one full day per park. Harry Potter fans need one more thing: a Park-to-Park ticket on the day you visit Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure together, because it is the only way to ride the Hogwarts Express between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade.

Admission is sold by Universal. On GetYourGuide you can add the Universal Orlando Resort 2-Park Express Pass (from around $133 per person, rated 4.2/5 from more than 300 reviews), which covers Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure but not Epic Universe. Prices change with the date, so check yours before you plan the day around it.

Add-on: Universal 2-Park Express Pass

Our quick picks:

  • Best park for a first-time visitor: Epic Universe
  • Best for roller coasters and thrill rides: Islands of Adventure
  • Best for Harry Potter fans: Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure together
  • Best for Nintendo fans: Epic Universe
  • Best with younger children: Epic Universe or Universal Studios Florida
  • Best if you only have one day: Islands of Adventure for thrills, Epic Universe for the newest rides
  • Ideal first trip: 3 days

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure sit on either side of Universal CityWalk and share the main parking garage at 6000 Universal Boulevard. Epic Universe has its own entrance and parking at 1001 Epic Boulevard, according to Universal’s directions page, so treat it as a separate destination you drive or shuttle to, not somewhere you wander into from the original parks.

Which Universal Orlando park is best?

For most first-time visitors in 2026, Epic Universe is the park we’d be most reluctant to skip. It opened on May 22, 2025, and Universal designed it from scratch as five immersive worlds instead of fitting new rides into an older park. You walk through portals from Celestial Park into SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.

Newest does not mean best for everyone. For the strongest thrill-ride lineup, Islands of Adventure has the better case: its headline rides are Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and The Incredible Hulk Coaster. And if Harry Potter is your reason for visiting Orlando, you need Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure together, because Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade are in separate parks and the Hogwarts Express connects them.

Our summary: Epic Universe is the best single showcase of modern Universal, Islands of Adventure is the best pure thrill park, and Universal Studios Florida becomes far more valuable when you pair it with Islands of Adventure.

1. Universal Studios Florida

Best for Diagon Alley, movie rides, shows and a less coaster-heavy day

Universal Studios Florida is the original Universal Orlando park, although decades of additions mean it no longer feels much like a working movie studio. Its eight themed lands are The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, Illumination’s Minion Land, DreamWorks Land, Springfield, Hollywood, San Francisco, New York and World Expo.

What makes Universal Studios Florida special?

Diagon Alley is the reason we’d still make time for this park. Universal hides the Wizarding World behind London façades, so the land appears only once you step inside, which makes the reveal far stronger than seeing it from the street. Inside are crooked shopfronts, Knockturn Alley, the Leaky Cauldron and the giant dragon perched on top of Gringotts Bank.

Its main ride is Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, a dark ride with coaster sections that runs beneath the bank. For a Potter fan this is one of the main reasons to visit Universal Orlando at all.

Best rides at Universal Studios Florida

Our priority list for a first visit:

  1. Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
  2. Revenge of the Mummy
  3. MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack
  4. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
  5. Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast
  6. The Simpsons Ride, if screen-based motion simulators don’t bother you
  7. Trolls Trollercoaster for younger children

The balance is different from Islands of Adventure. Universal Studios has thrills, but we wouldn’t choose it today for roller coasters alone. That will change: Universal lists Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a new coaster, as coming in 2027. Press reports say Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit closed in August 2026 to make room for it, so don’t plan a 2026 or 2027 visit around Rip Ride Rockit. Our ranking of the best rides at Universal Orlando covers each of these in detail.

Is Universal Studios Florida good for younger children?

Often, yes. DreamWorks Land has Trolls Trollercoaster and play areas themed to Shrek, Trolls and Kung Fu Panda. Minion Land gives families recognizable characters without everyone needing to be tall enough or brave enough for a big coaster.

Who should choose Universal Studios over Islands of Adventure?

Pick Universal Studios Florida if your group:

  • cares more about Diagon Alley than Hogsmeade
  • prefers dark rides and shows to extreme roller coasters
  • includes younger children
  • wants a gentler introduction to Universal
  • is visiting during an event such as Mardi Gras or Halloween Horror Nights

The park’s biggest weakness

If your group is mostly teenagers or serious coaster fans, Universal Studios can feel light on headline rides next to Islands of Adventure or Epic Universe. That is one reason we treat Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure as a pair instead of asking which one is better.

2. Universal Islands of Adventure

Best for thrill rides, Hogsmeade, Jurassic Park and teens

If your family loves roller coasters and you have one day at the original Universal Orlando parks, go to Islands of Adventure. Its themed lands are The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, Jurassic Park, Marvel Super Hero Island, Seuss Landing, Toon Lagoon, Skull Island, The Lost Continent and Port of Entry. What sets it apart is the ride lineup.

The three rides that define Islands of Adventure

Jurassic World VelociCoaster. For pure coaster thrills this is still one of Universal Orlando’s flagship rides. It races through the Jurassic World raptor paddock with launches, height, inversions and long stretches of airtime. Best for serious coaster fans; the minimum height is 51 inches.

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. Hagrid’s is a very different ride. Instead of a conventional coaster dressed up with Harry Potter decoration, it uses launches, storytelling, sets and unusual track movements to take you through the Forbidden Forest. We recommend it even to visitors who don’t usually like roller coasters. Best for almost anyone tall enough (48 inches) and comfortable with moderate-to-strong thrills.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster. Hulk is the old-school adrenaline hit. Universal lists a top speed of up to 67 mph, and you know exactly what you’re signing up for: a large, forceful outdoor coaster with inversions and a 54-inch minimum height. Best for people who see a huge coaster and start looking for the entrance.

Hogsmeade and Hogwarts

The second big reason to choose Islands of Adventure is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. This is where you’ll find:

  • Hogwarts Castle
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  • Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
  • Flight of the Hippogriff
  • Hogsmeade village
  • the Islands of Adventure station for the Hogwarts Express

For Harry Potter fans the ideal plan is not Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley but both, joined by the train: Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Express, Diagon Alley. Universal requires a Park-to-Park ticket or a qualifying pass to ride the Hogwarts Express and visit Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure on the same day.

Ride the Hogwarts Express both ways

The ride changes with your direction of travel. If Potter is a priority, go Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade, and later Hogsmeade to Diagon Alley, instead of treating the train as transport. Running days and hours can change around maintenance, so check Universal’s operating calendar for your date.

Islands of Adventure is also the park for getting soaked

On a hot Florida afternoon that helps. The park has Universal’s strongest set of big water rides, alongside the Jurassic rides and Toon Lagoon.

Check closures before you go. Jurassic Park River Adventure is closed for scheduled maintenance until December 16, 2026, and Universal says it reopens on December 17, according to its park hours and closures page. Attraction status matters as much as any park guide when you’re planning a specific date.

3. Universal Epic Universe

Best for Universal’s newest rides, Nintendo and modern theming

Epic Universe changed how we’d plan a Universal Orlando trip. Before 2025 a two-day trip made obvious sense: one day at Universal Studios and one at Islands of Adventure. Now three substantial theme parks compete for your time.

Epic Universe has five worlds:

  1. Celestial Park
  2. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
  3. Dark Universe
  4. How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
  5. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

The layout is the clever part. Celestial Park works as the central hub, and large themed portals lead into the other worlds, which are kept visually separate from each other. It feels closer to entering several self-contained destinations than walking from one loosely themed park area to the next.

Celestial Park

Celestial Park is more than an entry plaza. It has rides, restaurants, fountains, gardens and Stardust Racers, the dual-launch racing coaster that dominates the skyline. Universal lists it at up to 62 mph and 133 feet, and park specialists consistently rank it among Epic Universe’s strongest thrill rides.

Don’t treat Celestial Park as a corridor between portals. Come back after dark, when the lighting, fountains and lit-up coaster change the whole area, and Universal stages Celestial Goodnight, a fireworks and music finale, on scheduled evenings. Ride Stardust Racers at night if you can.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD

If you’ve played Mario or Donkey Kong, this is where Epic Universe earns its ticket price. The Orlando version has two zones, Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country, and three main rides:

  • Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge
  • Mine-Cart Madness
  • Yoshi’s Adventure

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge is an interactive ride, not a high-speed coaster. You travel through Mario Kart courses, throw shells and collect digital coins while competing against Team Bowser. You’ll enjoy it more if you stop expecting a racing coaster and treat it as stepping into a physical version of the game.

Mine-Cart Madness is the more thrilling Nintendo ride. This family coaster is themed to Donkey Kong Country, and its effects make your mine cart seem to jump gaps in the track, straight out of the video games. The minimum height is 40 inches (102 cm).

Yoshi’s Adventure is the gentle option and one of Epic Universe’s most useful rides for families with small children. It also gives you time to look around instead of firing you through the scenery at coaster speed.

You don’t need to be a Nintendo superfan. The scenery is so exaggerated and busy that the land works even if your Mario knowledge ends at “small plumber, red hat”. Anyone who grew up with Mario Kart, Yoshi or Donkey Kong will get much more out of the details.

Dark Universe

Dark Universe could have been a niche land for horror fans. Instead it has become one of the strongest reasons to visit Epic Universe. The setting is Darkmoor Village, a gloomy world of Universal’s classic monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is the headline ride. Dr. Victoria Frankenstein tries to control the monsters before Dracula unleashes a revolt. It is a dark ride, not a roller coaster, but Universal classes it as a thrill and motion-simulation ride with a 48-inch (122 cm) minimum height. There is no single big drop; the ride builds through animatronics, sets, movement and old-school monster imagery around you. Orlando Informer ranked it first among Epic Universe rides soon after the park opened, praising the animatronics and storytelling.

Curse of the Werewolf is the land’s second ride, a spinning family coaster with a 40-inch minimum. It matters less than Monsters Unchained, but it suits groups who like coasters without wanting anything as intense as Stardust Racers.

Visit Dark Universe from late afternoon into evening. Darkmoor looks gloomy enough in daylight, but the lighting and monster atmosphere make more sense as the sun goes down.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Berk may be the best Epic Universe land for families. It is broad, bright and playful, with enough going on that children can enjoy it without spending the whole day in ride queues. Its main attractions are:

  • Hiccup’s Wing Gliders
  • Dragon Racer’s Rally
  • Fyre Drill
  • The Untrainable Dragon
  • Toothless and other character encounters

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is the ride to prioritize: a story-led family coaster with enough speed to be exciting without being the park’s extreme coaster. Visitors who don’t care about the films still enjoy the mix of scenery and motion.

The Untrainable Dragon is a show, and you shouldn’t skip it to raise your ride count. Universal uses large dragon puppets and flying effects; its show page says Toothless has a wingspan of nearly 27 feet. It also makes a practical midday break from the Florida heat.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

This is the third Wizarding World at Universal Orlando, and it is not another Hogwarts village. The land combines 1920s wizarding Paris with the 1990s British Ministry of Magic. That sounds strange on paper, but in person it makes sense: you explore Paris above ground, and the main ride takes you by Métro-Floo into the British Ministry.

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is one of Epic Universe’s headline rides. You arrive around the time of Dolores Umbridge’s trial, board a magical lift and follow Harry, Ron and Hermione as events go wrong. The minimum height is 40 inches (102 cm). The queue is a big part of the ride, so don’t hurry through the rooms just because the line is moving.

Le Cirque Arcanus is the other big attraction, a live show with performers, puppetry and effects built around Fantastic Beasts creatures. Make time for it even on a ride-heavy day.

Universal now promotes trips that take in all three Wizarding World areas. For a serious Harry Potter fan, Universal Orlando has become a three-park destination; our Harry Potter at Universal Orlando guide covers each land, the rides and the tickets you need.

Universal Studios vs Islands of Adventure vs Epic Universe

Choose Universal Studios Florida if you want Diagon Alley, Escape from Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy, Minions and DreamWorks, more shows and indoor rides, fewer intimidating roller coasters, or Halloween Horror Nights in the fall.

Choose Islands of Adventure if you want VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s, Hulk, Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and the strongest overall day for thrill seekers.

Choose Epic Universe if you want SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, the Ministry of Magic, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon, Stardust Racers, Universal’s newest ride technology, and the most immersive themed lands of the three.

Which Universal park is best for children?

Height and personality matter more than age.

For preschool and younger school-age children, we’d rank them:

  1. Epic Universe
  2. Universal Studios Florida
  3. Islands of Adventure

Berk, Yoshi’s Adventure, Constellation Carousel and the Nintendo character experiences give Epic Universe unusual depth for families. Universal Studios has DreamWorks and the Minions. Islands of Adventure has the excellent Seuss Landing, but much of its appeal lies in bigger thrill rides. Our guide to Orlando with toddlers has more on height-free options.

For older children and teenagers the order flips: Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe share first place, and Universal Studios Florida comes third. A teenager who loves coasters could spend most of a day moving between Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster and Hulk.

Which Universal park is best if you don’t like roller coasters?

Probably Universal Studios Florida. It still has motion simulators and thrill rides, but you can build a satisfying day around Diagon Alley, the Minions, shows, interactive rides and gentler experiences.

Epic Universe also works well for non-coaster riders, because Battle at the Ministry, Monsters Unchained, Mario Kart, Yoshi’s Adventure, Le Cirque Arcanus and The Untrainable Dragon give you plenty to do. Islands of Adventure is the hardest sell if nobody in your group likes big thrill rides.

Which Universal park is best for Harry Potter?

For Harry Potter, the best experience is all three parks together. If you must rank them:

  1. Universal Studios Florida has the best Harry Potter setting. Diagon Alley gives the strongest feeling of walking into the books.
  2. Islands of Adventure has the best Harry Potter ride lineup, with Hagrid’s and Forbidden Journey in Hogsmeade.
  3. Epic Universe has the newest Wizarding World. The Ministry of Magic looks spectacular, and Battle at the Ministry is one of Universal’s newest big rides.

For a dedicated Potter trip, allow two days at minimum, ideally three.

How many days do you need at Universal Orlando?

One day: choose carefully

One day is no longer enough to see Universal Orlando. You are choosing a park.

  • For thrill seekers: Islands of Adventure.
  • For something new: Epic Universe.
  • For Harry Potter: Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure on a Park-to-Park ticket. It is ambitious, but you see both original Wizarding Worlds and ride the Hogwarts Express.

Two days: good, but you give something up

Spend day 1 at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure on a Park-to-Park ticket, and day 2 at Epic Universe. This works best if your priority at Universal Studios is Diagon Alley, not every ride in the park.

Three days: right for most first visits

This is our recommended baseline:

  • Day 1, Universal Studios Florida: take your time in Diagon Alley and at the shows.
  • Day 2, Islands of Adventure: ride Hagrid’s and VelociCoaster early, then explore Hogsmeade and Jurassic Park.
  • Day 3, Epic Universe: spend a full day across all five worlds and stay after dark if the hours allow.

With three days you stop treating the parks like a checklist. Some of Universal’s best moments happen between rides: Diagon Alley after dark, wandering Darkmoor Village, playing inside Nintendo World or watching the portals light up at Epic Universe. Our guide to Universal ticket options explains which multi-day ticket matches each of these plans.

Four days: add Volcano Bay

In warm weather a fourth day gives you room for Universal’s water park, with slides, rivers, a wave pool and the Krakatau Aqua Coaster. For 2026, Universal says Volcano Bay closes for seasonal maintenance from October 26, 2026 and reopens on or before April 1, 2027, so check the date before you build a winter itinerary around it.

Do you need a Park-to-Park ticket?

If you’re visiting only Epic Universe, no. If you’re spending a whole day at Universal Studios and another at Islands of Adventure, not necessarily.

You do need admission to both parks on the same day if you want to:

  • ride the Hogwarts Express
  • move between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley
  • combine Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure in one day

Universal states that Park-to-Park admission or a qualifying pass is required for the Hogwarts Express. For Potter fans we count that upgrade as part of the experience. Park-to-Park is sold by Universal; our Universal ticket options guide compares the ticket types and how Epic Universe fits into each.

Can you walk between the Universal Orlando parks?

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure: yes. Their entrances sit on either side of CityWalk, a short walk apart, and with the right ticket you can also travel between their Wizarding Worlds on the Hogwarts Express.

Epic Universe and the original parks: there is no practical walking route. Epic Universe parks at 1001 Epic Boulevard, while the garage for Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and CityWalk is at 6000 Universal Boulevard. Universal hotels run transportation around the resort; the newer Stella Nova and Terra Luna hotels, for example, advertise free shuttles to the theme parks and CityWalk.

Don’t plan to “hop over to Epic Universe for a couple of rides” the way you move between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Give Epic Universe its own day.

Is Universal Express worth it?

Sometimes. Express pays off when:

  • you’re visiting during a busy school-holiday period
  • you only have one day
  • ride count matters more than budget
  • you’re combining Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure

Epic Universe works differently. Universal says most Epic Universe rides take part in Express, but its Epic Universe product is not the same as the Express Unlimited pass sold for the original parks, and Helios Grand Hotel does not include free Express Unlimited even though it belongs to Universal’s Signature Collection. Epic Universe Express is sold only by Universal; GetYourGuide has no listing for it.

For the original two parks, the 2-Park Express Pass from around $133 covers both on one date. One-park versions, the Universal Studios Florida Express Pass (4.1/5 from 38 reviews) and the Islands of Adventure Express Pass (3.7/5 from 27 reviews, a small sample with mixed scores), start from around $122. Our Universal Express breakdown covers which version to buy, and our Universal Orlando tickets guide explains when Express is worth the money.

Early Park Admission

Universal hotel guests and some other qualifying visitors can enter selected rides up to 1 hour before normal opening. The participating park and rides vary: Universal’s October and November 2026 schedule, for example, lists Early Park Admission at Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe on selected dates. Because the park changes, don’t count on Epic Universe always opening early for hotel guests. Check the Universal app or the official operating calendar shortly before your visit.

Universal Orlando with motion sickness

Universal uses more screens and motion simulation than many visitors expect. If you’re sensitive, approach The Simpsons Ride, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and other simulator-style rides with care. Some people find roller coasters easier than simulators, because their eyes and bodies feel the same movement.

A simple plan:

  1. Don’t start the morning with a heavy meal.
  2. Try one moderate ride first.
  3. Alternate rides with outdoor areas and shows.
  4. Don’t assume a ride is gentle on the stomach just because it isn’t a coaster.

This matters most at Universal Studios, where several rides rely on screen-based motion. Our Universal rides ranking lists the riskiest rides one by one.

Universal Orlando in the rain

Florida thunderstorms don’t automatically ruin a Universal day. Universal Studios Florida is a good rainy-day park because so many of its big rides and queues are indoors. Outdoor coasters and water rides may stop running during lightning or severe weather.

Epic Universe also has large indoor attractions: Battle at the Ministry, Monsters Unchained, Mario Kart, Le Cirque Arcanus and The Untrainable Dragon. If the forecast looks bad, rearrange the day instead of cancelling it. Save outdoor coasters for clear spells and use the storms for meals, shows and indoor rides.

Universal Orlando in the fall: Halloween Horror Nights

On Halloween Horror Nights evenings, Universal Studios Florida can close early to daytime guests while the separately ticketed event takes over the park. For 2026, Universal runs Halloween Horror Nights on select nights from August 28 to November 1; the GetYourGuide ticket starts from around $97 and is rated 4.4/5 from more than 100 reviews.

Shorter daytime hours can cut your touring time a lot. If you visit in September or October, check the closing time before you pick your Universal Studios day. On event dates, Islands of Adventure is often the better park for the evening.

If you can only skip one Universal park, which should it be?

For most first-time adults and teenagers, skip Universal Studios Florida before Islands of Adventure or Epic Universe.

There is one big exception: don’t skip Universal Studios if you’re a Harry Potter fan. Diagon Alley is central to the Universal Potter experience, and skipping the park removes half of the Hogwarts Express journey. For families with younger children who dislike roller coasters, the choice reverses, and Universal Studios may make more sense than Islands of Adventure.

Universal Orlando plans by type of visitor

For thrill seekers

  • Day 1: Islands of Adventure
  • Day 2: Epic Universe
  • Day 3: Universal Studios, plus rerides at Islands of Adventure

Top priorities: VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s, Hulk, Stardust Racers, Monsters Unchained, Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, Mine-Cart Madness and Revenge of the Mummy.

For Harry Potter fans

  • Day 1: Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure on a Park-to-Park ticket
  • Day 2: Epic Universe
  • Day 3: return to whichever Wizarding World you liked most

Don’t miss Diagon Alley, Escape from Gringotts, the Hogwarts Express in both directions, Hogsmeade, Forbidden Journey, Hagrid’s, the Ministry of Magic, Battle at the Ministry and Le Cirque Arcanus.

For families with younger children

  • Day 1: Universal Studios
  • Day 2: Epic Universe
  • Day 3: Islands of Adventure, or a rest and pool day

Make time for DreamWorks Land, the Minion rides, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Yoshi’s Adventure, the Isle of Berk, The Untrainable Dragon, Seuss Landing and character encounters.

For a couple without children

  • Day 1: Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios
  • Day 2: Epic Universe from opening until after dark
  • Day 3: whichever park you liked most, then CityWalk

Universal suits couples who want rides during the day without a Disney-style schedule of evening reservations. Teenagers get their own plan in our guide to Orlando with teenagers.

Head-to-head: two parks at a time

Universal Studios vs Islands of Adventure

Islands of Adventure is better for rides. Universal Studios is better for atmosphere, Diagon Alley and entertainment.

Islands of Adventure wins onUniversal Studios wins on
Roller coastersDiagon Alley
Thrill ridesIndoor rides
Jurassic ParkShows
Hagrid’sHalloween Horror Nights
HogsmeadeOptions for younger children

The two parks complement each other so well that Park-to-Park makes more sense here than at many multi-park resorts.

Islands of Adventure vs Epic Universe

This is the harder comparison.

Pick Islands of Adventure if coaster quality matters most, Hagrid’s and VelociCoaster are priorities, you’re a traditional Harry Potter fan or you love Jurassic Park.

Pick Epic Universe if immersive theming matters most, you want Nintendo, you prefer newer ride technology, your group spans different ages and interests, or this may be your only Universal visit for many years.

For a first-time visitor we’d choose Epic Universe. For a coaster enthusiast, Islands of Adventure.

Universal Studios vs Epic Universe

For most visitors without a strong franchise preference, Epic Universe. It is newer, more coherent and has a stronger mix of headline rides.

Universal Studios still matters, because Epic Universe has no Diagon Alley, Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy, Minions, DreamWorks, Hogwarts Express connection or seasonal events such as Halloween Horror Nights. Think of Epic Universe as an addition to Universal Orlando, not Universal Studios 2.0.

What about Universal Volcano Bay?

Visitors often get confused by Universal’s park count. Volcano Bay is Universal Orlando’s water park, built around the 200-foot Krakatau volcano, with slides, rivers, a wave pool and other water rides. Admission is sold by Universal; GetYourGuide has no Volcano Bay ticket.

Add it if:

  • you’re staying four days or longer
  • you’re visiting in hot weather
  • your children love water parks
  • you want a lower-pressure day between theme parks

On a short first trip, don’t give up Epic Universe or Islands of Adventure for Volcano Bay unless water parks are one of the main reasons you travel. Remember the seasonal closure from October 26, 2026 until spring 2027.

Which Universal ticket should you buy?

  • One park per day: suits a trip to only Epic Universe or only Islands of Adventure.
  • Park-to-Park: worth considering if you want Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure on the same day, and required for the Hogwarts Express between Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade.
  • Multi-day tickets: usually the better choice for a first trip now that Universal Orlando has three substantial theme parks.

Universal sells admission directly, on its website or app. For a guided first day at the two original parks, the Universal 2-Park 1-Day VIP Experience costs from around $319 per person and is rated 4.5/5 from 25 reviews, a small sample. It adds a 7-hour guide, priority rides and meals but not park admission, so read our VIP breakdown before you book. Prices and ticket rules change, so check exactly which parks your ticket includes before you book. Our Universal ticket options guide compares every ticket type, and our Epic Universe tickets guide covers Epic-only questions.

Coming changes to watch

Universal rides and schedules change through the year. Before you go, check for:

  • ride closures, such as Jurassic Park River Adventure until December 16, 2026
  • new openings, led by Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift at Universal Studios Florida in 2027
  • Epic Universe changes, since the park is still new
  • the Volcano Bay seasonal closure
  • early closing at Universal Studios on Halloween Horror Nights dates

Once Hollywood Drift opens, Universal Studios will have a stronger coaster lineup than it does in 2026, and our comparison above will change with it.

Frequently asked questions

How many Universal parks are there in Orlando?

Universal Orlando has three theme parks, Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, plus the Volcano Bay water park. Universal CityWalk is the resort’s dining and entertainment district, not a theme park.

Is Epic Universe part of Universal Orlando?

Yes. Epic Universe is Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park, opened on May 22, 2025. It sits apart from the original Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and CityWalk complex and has its own parking at 1001 Epic Boulevard.

Is Epic Universe better than Universal Studios?

For most first-time visitors we’d choose Epic Universe, because it has more new rides and more deeply themed lands. Universal Studios remains essential for Diagon Alley and several classic Universal rides.

Is Islands of Adventure better than Universal Studios?

For thrill seekers, yes: Islands of Adventure has Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster and Hulk. For Harry Potter atmosphere, younger children, or visitors who prefer indoor rides and shows, Universal Studios may suit you better.

Which Universal Orlando park has Nintendo World?

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is inside Epic Universe. It has Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country, with Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Mine-Cart Madness and Yoshi’s Adventure.

Which Universal park has Harry Potter?

All three Universal Orlando theme parks have a Wizarding World: Diagon Alley at Universal Studios, Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure and the Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe.

Which Universal park has Hogwarts?

Islands of Adventure. Hogwarts Castle is the centerpiece of Hogsmeade and houses Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

Which Universal park has Diagon Alley?

Universal Studios Florida.

Which park has the Hagrid’s ride?

Islands of Adventure.

Which park has VelociCoaster?

Islands of Adventure.

Which park has Stardust Racers?

Epic Universe, in Celestial Park.

Can you visit all three Universal parks in one day?

Your ticket may let you enter more than one park, but we wouldn’t try to see all three properly in a single day. Epic Universe sits apart from the other two and needs a full day.

Is two days enough for Universal Orlando?

Two days works if you combine Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure on one day and give the second to Epic Universe. Three days is much better for a first visit.

Is three days enough for Universal Orlando?

Yes. For most visitors three days is the right length: one day each at Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe. Add a fourth for Volcano Bay or plenty of rerides.

The bottom line

Universal Orlando is no longer a choice between Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure; Epic Universe has changed the decision. For a first trip, think of the parks like this:

  • Universal Studios Florida: movies, Diagon Alley and shows
  • Islands of Adventure: coasters, Hogsmeade and Jurassic Park
  • Epic Universe: Nintendo, a new Wizarding World, monsters, dragons and Universal’s newest rides

If your budget and schedule allow, give each park a full day. With two days, combine Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure and keep the second day for Epic Universe. With one, choose Islands of Adventure if you’re chasing rides and Epic Universe if you want to see where Universal theme parks are heading. Then check your dates on Universal’s operating calendar, because hours, closures and event nights change through the year.
