From Orlando: Day Trip to St. Augustine with Hotel Pickup

About This Experience
This day trip takes you from Orlando to St. Augustine on Florida's northeast coast, the oldest continuously settled town in the United States. You are picked up at your hotel and driven north with a driver-guide who shares background on the way. The whole day runs about 12 hours, and most of it is yours to spend in the historic district, with its narrow streets, cafes, bars and small shops.
St. Augustine is compact but has a lot to see. The stone walls of Castillo de San Marcos face Matanzas Bay, and the grand buildings of Flagler College and the Lightner Museum sit a short walk inland. You can also look for the Fountain of Youth and the Oldest Wooden School House. How much you fit in depends on how fast you walk and which option you book.
The options add structure to the day. The basic day tour pairs a guided look at the landmarks with free time. Other options add a narrated scenic cruise on Matanzas Bay, the Colonial Quarter living museum with musket firing and blacksmith demonstrations, a hop-on hop-off trolley with 22 stops on a 7-mile loop, or the Pirate and Treasure Museum. The trolley is useful because the coach drop-off is not in the center of the old town.
Food, drinks and tips are not included, so plan to buy lunch in town. You also receive a digital Eat and Play Card with discounts at Orlando restaurants and attractions, valid for six months after activation. Bring comfortable shoes and sunscreen, since you will be walking in the sun for hours. Pets, luggage and large bags are not allowed, and tours must be booked at least two days in advance.
This suits travelers who want a break from the theme parks and enjoy history, architecture and wandering. It is a long day with several hours on the road, and traffic on the way back to Orlando can be heavy. If you want a beach day or have young children who struggle in a coach, a closer trip may suit you better.

I enjoyed this excursion quite a bit and being picked up from the hotel was extremely helpful. Couple things I wished I would have known were that a midway stop is not always possible so my hopes of visiting a Buc-ee’s was dashed, not a big deal but I was looking forward to it. Second if you want to go to the island and see the light house or beach, you better do that early as the bus runs on the hour. I waited to the afternoon and realized there was no way to do it. Lesson learned. The hop on/off trolley was awesome and a life saver for getting up and down the town. Did the fountain of youth and was happy I did. The St. George street shopping was mediocre so don’t get your hopes up for anything great. I did get a nice magnet from stop 1 shop. I would love to go back and see more of the sights so hopefully that’s in my near future.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much free time do you get in St. Augustine?
The trip runs about 12 hours in total, including the drive each way from Orlando. The listing promises plenty of free time rather than a fixed figure. One traveler reported about 11 hours door to door, with around seven hours in St. Augustine, but traffic and pickup order can change that on the day.
Which tour option should I choose?
If you want to cover more ground, the hop-on hop-off trolley is the practical choice, with 22 stops on a 7-mile loop and a drop-off area outside the old town. The Matanzas Bay cruise suits anyone who wants a view from the water, while the Colonial Quarter and pirate museum options work well for families with children.
Is lunch included?
No. Food and drinks are not included, so plan to buy lunch at one of the cafes or restaurants in the historic district. Tips for the driver-guide are also extra. You do get a digital Eat and Play Card, but its discounts apply to Orlando-area restaurants and attractions rather than in St. Augustine.
How far ahead do I need to book?
All St. Augustine tours must be purchased at least two days before your planned date, so this is not one to book the night before. Once booked, you can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund, which lets you reserve early and adjust if your plans or the forecast change.
Is this trip suitable for children?
It can be, especially with the Pirate and Treasure Museum or Colonial Quarter option, which are built around hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. Keep in mind the day lasts around 12 hours with several hours on the coach and a lot of walking in the sun. Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen and snacks for younger children.
